Led by individual runner-up Maddie Coles, Claremont High School’s girls’ cross country team won its third-straight CIF Division 2 Cross Country state meet title Saturday, November 24 at Woodward Park in Fresno.
Because of the strength of the team and the D2 California State Meet win, the girls’ squad was selected to compete in the prestigious Nike Cross Country Nationals this coming Saturday, December 1 in Portland, Oregon. The CHS team also ran in last year’s NXN meet and finished ninth.
CHS scored 82 points to edge Granada (95 points) and Mission Viejo (136 points). A total of 24 teams competed. Claremont HS joins Saugus as only the second team in Division 2 history to win at least three titles in a row.
Coles took second individually to pace the CHS team. The frosh sensation ran 17:44.8 over the rolling dirt 5000m (3.1 mile) course to finish in the runner-up position behind Kristin Fahy of La Costa Canyon, who won in 17:22.6. Behind Coles for CHS were junior Azalea Segura-Mora (14th, 18:13.1), senior Sydney Hwang (20th, 18:18.6), senior Kalinda Reynolds (26th, 18:29.6), and senior Julia Marriott (42nd, 18:44.8).
